We have been working on a new single – “Blue Sunny Skies.” For a non-artist/non-songwriter, I thought perhaps it might be a fun process to dive into how a song goes from being written to being released as a single or on an album. It’s one thing to write the lyrics and melody, but it’s a whole other thing to actually go into the studio and get it produced and recorded.

So in this series of blog posts, we’ll take the new single I’m working on and dissect it over the course of a few posts so you can get first hand insight into how we build a song.

This song is titled “Blue Sunny Skies” and actually started out years ago as a love song. As we started to contemplate what songs to record this year, I revisited the song and decided to give it a re-write. Sometimes it’s just good to revisit something and see if there’s room for the song to grow.

My wife has always been my sounding board, offering opinions about this word or that, or about this chord or that, but we’ve never actually sat down and written a song together. So we decided to do just that for this song and to give it more of a “state of mind” theme than a “love” theme.

I’ll start our series off by sharing the lyrics here with you:

BLUE SUNNY SKIES
(Lyrics and Music by John Tracy Wilson, John Tracy Publishing, ACSAP)

It’s a brand new day, no worries in the way
Victory in our eyes
We can conquer any storm
With blue sunny skies

CHORUS:
Blue sunny skies
For you and I
When we realize
Laughter is our prize
Livin’ with blue sunny skies

Once you’ve had a glimpse of how amazing it can be
No one can tell you otherwise
And there’s nothing better than to blind adversity
With blue sunny skies

CHORUS:
Blue sunny skies
For you and I
When we realize
Laughter is our prize
Livin’ with blue sunny skies

BRIDGE:
We’ll keep pulling through
To clear skies of blue
Our fate is sealed
The way has been revealed
Like a beam of light shining bright and true

CHORUS:
Blue sunny skies
For you and I
When we realize
Laughter is our prize
Livin’ with blue sunny skies
Oh can’t you see blue sunny skies

Stay tuned for more in the coming posts!
